Trivia:   

After building PCAN & PCAC, Clay sent a letter to NBC requesting old recordings for the troops. This set off a firestorm response from NBC who immediately sent 1000 recordings weighing a ton. NBC also set up over 20 short-wave broadcasts to soldiers worldwide at the expense of their sponsors, not AFRS. AFRS was not created for a year & a half after PCAN was built. NBC provided the broadcasts & recording materials. See true history of PCAN for more info.

Msgt Frank Hawkridge Jr:

Duties:  

Panama Coast Artillery Command at Quarry Heights, Canal Zone. Original co-founder of PCAN & PCAC radio in the CZ and AFRS. Hawkridge was the Engineer who literally built the first two military radio stations in Panama in 1940. PCAC & PCAN.

Trivia:   

He was reassigned stateside  in early October 1941. During his time in Panama,  Master Sergeant Clay Doster and others worked together to provide some "back home" entertainment to soldiers stationed throughout Panama's remote artillery sites. This eventually lead to forming of the Armed Forces Radio Service and SCN.  

 

Msgt Doster was reportedly brought into the picture because they thought they needed someone of more significant rank involved in hopes of having a better chance of getting some attention from those at Radio City Music Hall who would have the most influence in the decision making process

Biographic Details:  

Born Dec. 24, 1913 in Philadelphia, Penn.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June of 1934 and was initially a truck driver until he managed to change to radio repairman.  After being reassigned from Panama in late 1941 he was assigned to Camp Stewart, Georgia where he met and married Willella Moore of Glennville, Georgia. They had four children, Frances in Feb. '43, Joseph in Aug. '44, David in Oct. '46 and Catherine in Nov. '47.  

 

After 26 years of service he retired from the Army on June 1960 at the rank of Msgt and later worked in the Civil Service at Mather AFB and McClellan Army Depot near Sacramento, California.  

 

In 1970, after 10 years Civil service he retired for the last time to live the "good life".

On Nov. 9, 1972, he died of a heart attack in Rancho Cordova, California.  His wife Willella moved to Florida to be near family and passed away in April 1997.  He is survived by daughters Frances and Catherine of Lakeland, Florida and son David of Lexington, South Carolina.
