Radio DJ & TV Personality |

Tony T (Tiger) was an on air personality. He was well known as a radio DJ and in his work on a few episodes of the "Que Pasa" TV program. He also directed some TV. Tony was the last DJ on the air when the Canal Zone era officially ended and the first DJ which entered into the era beginning the final 2 decades of transformation into Panama. The final song of the CZ era was "The Way We Were." Tony worked all of the board shifts from Graveyard to mornings. He finished his tour in Panama as the morning man but the afternoons were his favorite. He always ended his show with, "That's gonna do it for me. Tony T as always, stand tall and keep it ever ever so tight." Tony used to have characters on the show such as the Godfather and these adoring females who used to say his name in a very sultry manner. |
|
| Trivia: |
On humorous note, after leaving SCN, Tony was on board ship for an oil company transiting the canal. The Canal pilot came on board, who usually goes directly to the Captain of the vessel but this time, he walked right past the Captain and put his arm around Tony and said, "Tony T, where the hell have you been?!! My daughter and I were just talking about you last night." The Captain talked about that incident for weeks! |

1971 - 73 | |
|
Designation: |
Air Force Sgt | |
| Duties: |
After leaving Air
Traffic Control Barry cross-trained as a broadcast journalist and
was assigned to SCN until he separated in December ’73.
Had at least one radio program of oldies called “Yesterday Once More.” He was with SCN for about a year. Assistant NCOIC of Radio at one point.
Barry was also a puppeteer for the SCN children's afternoon show. Barry has a few recollections of the Saturday morning children's show. He acquired a couple of Muppet puppets, did quite a passable Kermit, maybe the 2nd one was Oscar and also voiced Yogi & BooBoo. He sat on the floor and stuck his hand through the set wall a few times as a guest puppeteer. |
|
| Trivia: | Late one night, Gorgas hospital called to ask whether SCN could broadcast a request for A-positive blood for a girl who was in dire need. So Barry told his colleague not only to broadcast it, but to tell the listeners that he would personally be coming down to give blood. He hopped into some freshly starched fatigues and had a car take him to the hospital where he did his best to entertain a roomful of late night blood donors. Until it was his turn, they stuck the needle in his arm, in the same room and in sight of his public, blood spurted out and Barry passed out. | |
| Biographic Details: |
Barry had been in radio when
he was younger, high school stuff and had an overnight show on WCIB in
Falmouth, MA when he was stationed at Otis AFB.
Barry married a Woman in the Air Force at Otis, and they were assigned to the CZ together. He was originally stationed at Howard. By the time he went to Ft. Clayton they were separated or divorced, so he had moved off the economy and into the SCN barracks during the last piece of his tour. Ever since he was a kid he had been fascinated by broadcasting. When he did well on his ASVAB's and the Air Force said he could essentially have any job he wanted, he said enthusiastically "put me behind a microphone" and ended up as an Air Traffic Controller. and found himself in an 8am-2pm tower at Albrook. So he started writing newspaper articles for the 1978th Comm. Group. He found his way to SCN after testing to bypass DINFOS. Gerry put Barry in radio and they created a little show of oldies for me called "Yesterday Once More." He remembers writing quite a touching eulogy to Jim Croce. After returning to CONUS, he did not stay in broadcasting. |
|
|
Most recent info: |
However,
today, he is a Talent Executive and Talent Producer for television,
most notably TV Land (MTV Networks). Barry has been in talent for
about 26 years and also served for many years on the Secretary of
the Air Force-Public Affairs Advisory Board. |

Army 71R. Radio & TV production specialist, Engineering |
|
| Duties: |
Worked for a short time as TV Sportscaster, then as Morning Show News Anchor on Radio. Worked as staff announcer working up to a short lived stint as Morning Show DJ. Moved over to the TV side of the operation and worked as Technical Director and Audio/Film Chain operator. Then worked with Woody Holbrook in TV production administration. Realizing the career limitations in the production side of broadcasting, he succeeded in getting the opportunity to help the engineering staff and finally working there full time. On his second tour, he was in Engineering for the full duration of his tour. Responsible for recommending the Stand-Up board for the AM radio studio, helped install the FM studio and the FM Automation system (later became the engineer responsible for the automation system, affectionately known as "Mother") Also rewired the TV Audio system after the 'new' color Grass Valley video switcher was installed. |
