Tour of Duty:

1977 - 1981

Designation:

Radio DJ & TV Personality

Duties:

Tony T (Tiger) was an on air personality. He was well known as a radio DJ and in his work on a few episodes of the "Que Pasa" TV program. He also directed some TV.

Tony was the last DJ on the air when the Canal Zone era officially ended and the first DJ which entered into the era beginning the final 2 decades of transformation into Panama.

The final song of the CZ era was "The Way We Were."

Tony worked all of the board shifts from Graveyard to mornings. He finished his tour in Panama as the morning man but the afternoons were his favorite. He always ended his show with, "That's gonna do it for me. Tony T as always, stand tall and keep it ever ever so tight."

Tony used to have characters on the show such as the Godfather and these adoring females who used to say his name in a very sultry manner.

Trivia:

On  humorous note, after leaving SCN, Tony was on board ship for an oil company transiting the canal. The Canal pilot came on board, who usually goes directly to the Captain of the vessel but this time, he walked right past the Captain and put his arm around Tony and said, "Tony T, where the hell have you been?!! My daughter and I were just talking about you last night." The Captain talked about that incident for weeks!

Tour of Duty:

1970 - 1973

Duties:

Originally assigned to the newspaper in 1970. After a few months, they needed help in TV so he moved upstairs and went to work for Bill Knowles as an audio man and then director. Directed all the newscasts and Uncle Bob 72 & 73

Distinguished himself in the role of the talking lamp on the Uncle Bob show. SCN had several info/entertainment shows during those years. They had a regular weekly show that was called Que Pasa. That was the show where Major Holter's son lost a camera off the roof over the door while taping a performance of a Panamanian dance troupe on the front lawn.

Bill remembers an interview that was done by Bob Kenward and Pete Franquet with Trevor Howard. All three of them were smoking during the interview with a large ash tray as the centerpiece. Several of the spots the program cut to were PSAs for the American Cancer Society. SCN also did shows with Cliff Robertson and Dina Merrill; Mohamed Ali and the usual local celebs like Barbara Moller and the wife of one of SCN's audio guys who hosted regularly.

Bill lived for two years or so across the street from the El Panama and shared an apartment with Chuck Hawsey for a time a few blocks away. As far as he can recall, Lucho was still playing there when he left Panama.

Trivia:

Bill's main buddies were Steve Dick, Fluffy Felsch, Steve Seay, Steve Azlin, Lee McGowan, Denis Fink. Those were really great times. They spent most of their free time at the beach. When Bill married Sue Jellum they had an apartment in Balboa and a vast estate in El Valle.

Biographic Details:

Was from Norfolk, Nebraska.

Left Panama and became NCOIC of Educational Television Production Division at Ft. Ord for two years before returning to Panama where he served two more tours. Spent three years in the 9th Psyops Bn then four at the School of the Americas Seccion de Television Educativa - both in Ft. Gulick.

Left Panama again and spent the next four years handling advertising for the San Juan District Recruiting Command in Puerto Rico.

After PR Bill went to the Presidio of San Francisco as NCOIC/ Information Supervisor. The Army sent him to grad school in S. Carolina then to Stars & Stripes Tokyo where he stayed for four years.

His last tour was DINFOS where he served as an Assistant Professor of Geopolitical Studies. Finished Law School at IU and retired from DINFOS in the same week.

Since then he spent 10 years in the Alternative press starting papers in Indy and Bloomington and serving as president and COO of the corporation that owned them and four others around the country. Founded and published a running magazine for 20 years. After taking a buyout from that company, he was convinced to come out of retirement again.

Most recent info:

His most recent (and final - he means it this time) endeavors involve publishing seven real estate magazines throughout Indiana.

Married to Kathy for twenty years, four children and three grandchildren.

Bill is also playing in a rock band called "The Counterfeiters" appearing at local clubs, events and conventions. All of the band members have decades of band experience behind them. There is currently a very popular wave of rock bands being resurrected across the country which were popular in the 60's and 70's.
