Duties:  

Worked at both CFN and SCN.

Along with MSG Bob Foster and USAF Sergeant Ed Johnson were part the only four person news team. They all wore their respective uniforms on air and the navy white, army green and air force blue gave the engineers fits trying to chromakey. The other part of that news crew was Mrs. Silvia Thomas, volunteer that did the local weather and women's news.

Became a well known Anchor and director for SCN.  Teamed up with Paul Hogan to create one of the best news teams at SCN.  The 1968 Elections was a key highlight best remembered in Dave's career at SCN.

Trivia:  

A second item of fame was Dave Cohen's "Facial Expressions" which kept the rest of the crew in stitches and earned him the nickname "The FACE."

Lived in the Canal Zone from 1961-1964 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1963

Attended Canal Zone College for a year before going to the University of Missouri

Met Jack Harry when he assisted with color commentary on some high school sporting events covered by SCN

Later worked with Jack Harry again at WDAF-TV in Kansas City

Worked in the media from 1970 - 1988 as a reporter in Utica (NY), Kansas City (MO), Chicago and San Diego.

During his CZ tour, he lived in Cocoli with his wife Susie and daughter Susan.

Biographic Details:  

He spent 8 years at Ft Ord, California before arriving at SCN in the Canal Zone.

Considered California his home although he was born in Puerto Rico.

Prior to his military career, Jorge worked at WKAQ radio in Puerto Rico as an engineer. 

Jorge had been assigned to many overseas tours with the Army including Japan, Korea, Hawaii and Spain. Other overseas assignments included Cairo, Istanbul, Casablanca and Naples, Italy. Most of his assignments were with the American Embassies where he inspected electronic equipment.

He planned to retire from the Army with 20 years of service when he left SCN and intended to return to California to continue working as a radio & TV engineer.

He spent 15 of his 20 year career at sea.

After leaving in 1965, he was to be assigned back to the US for Recruiting Duty.

Joined the USAF on 7-4-1957 and became an instructor pilot in Texas for several years.

Left the USAF in Aug 1965 to return to the US to obtain his MS degree in Radio & TV at Syracuse University.

Married with 4 children at the time he left SCN.

Duties:  

In addition to her secretarial and receptionist duties, Jean was responsible for  typing the weekly program schedule for SCN and see that it is finished and ready for printing in the SCN newspaper.

She also typed the television logs and prepared the Canal Zone Calendar for Radio and TV.

Trivia:  

She also took the time to sew on stripes and buttons acting as Den Mother for the SCN troops.

SP5 Mortimer De Leon:

Army. Spanish news & NCOIC Broadcast Ops & acting 1st Sgt

Duties:  

He was  transferred to SCN in December 1964 as the chief Spanish News Announcer from his assignment with the 74th Quartermaster detachment in the Panama Canal Zone . 

In addition to announcing the Spanish news on radio & TV, Mortimer also wrote and edited his own newscasts.

Mortimer returned to SCN for a second tour as NCOIC Broadcast Ops and acting 1st Sgt.

Biographic Details:  

Originally from Gurabo, Puerto Rico.  Attended the University of Puerto Rico where he also played the Saxophone in the ROTC band.

Joined the US Army in December 1962 where he attended basic training at Ft Jackson, SC and then attended Quartermaster school in Ft Lee, VA.

He was transferred to Stuttgart, Germany with the 35th Quartermaster battalion where he served from 1963 to 1964. 

Mortimer planned to continue his education in Civil Engineering when he completed his tour of duty in the Army.

Entered the Navy in 1961. 

Was assigned to Kenitra, Morocco whre he worked with AFRS station WNAA and the Kenitra Kourier newspaper doing every type of job from Janitor to Editor.

Jerry left the Navy in March 1966 to return to his hometown of Binghampton, NY.
