Current Status:

FOUND

Tour of Duty:

May 1959 - late 62

Designation:

OIC & MSGT

Duties:

When Bill first arrived at CFN, he had such a terrible Texas drawl, CFN wouldn't let him on the air except to do "Bunkhouse Round-up" from 11 to noon each weekday and "Western Swing Party" on Saturday mornings.

They assigned Bill as the record librarian but he also did some TV production; camera, audio, directing, etc.

Later learned to talk "Mid-American" and did a little bit of everything - even did "Symphony Hall" a few times.

Dee Trantor and Bill (Bee and Dee) did a Saturday morning show called "Music Mania." It was a Bob and Ray type production with short skits mixed in with off-beat music. They may not have had a lot of listeners but they sure had a lot of fun and often recruited other staff members to help out.

Trivia:

NA

Biographic Details:

After leaving CFN, Bill was assigned to First Army Recruiting District Headquarters at Ft. Meade, Md. They produced public service announcements and programs for area radio stations. Bill was assigned to produce a C&W program but before they could get it off the ground a Maj. Malone (WAC) walked into the studio one morning and saw Bill reading a copy of "Billboard." She decided that if he had nothing better to do than "sit around and read magazines," they must not need him much. He spent the rest of his time there in the message
center.

Bill put on his civvies and worked for several radio stations in West and North Texas, got married, and re-enlisted after a couple of years. Served as Press Chief with the Air Defense Command Information Office at Ft. Bliss, Tx. Took an early out and re-upped again so he could attend the Defense Language Institute to learn Vietnamese. Had a car wreck en route to Ft. Meyer and missed the class.

Spent a while at Ft. Carson, Colo., first with the Public Information Office and then as Battalion clerk with an Infantry unit preparing for Vietnam. Before they were sent to 'Nam, he received orders to Alaska with the Fort Richardson Information Office. They were overstaffed
and he managed to get transferred to Alaskan Forces Radio Network at Elmendorf AFB. He was assigned to the news department and later became news director.

When it became apparent that the war in Vietnam was being run by politicians instead of the military, he took an early out and attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage for a year, then worked for several radio stations in Anchorage including KYAK where he did the midnight-to-six d.j. shift and did some news reporting and production.

He was also news director at KJZZ-FM for awhile. After spending a few months on the North Slope while they were preparing to build the Alaska pipeline, he went to work selling advertising for the Anchorage Times and Daily News.

Returned to Texas in 1975 and worked in various capacities - reporter, editor, sales, production, managing editor, etc. - with small-market newspapers where he  met his second wife.

Most recent info:

Bill is now semi-retired and living in Weatherford, Texas, just west of the
