Questions & Answers
It is similar to an e-mail chat. Members of the group send messages to the central email address for our group. The group list will then automatically redistribute each message to all of the subscribed members simultaneously. Any messages or replies sent to the central group email address will be sent out to all members. Unlike a chat room, an email discussion group allows the members to read and respond to the messages at their leisure. This group email is very easy to learn. You will catch on very quickly.
Each member can read the messages at their leisure and reply to the message if desired, which will be received by all members if you replied to the group list email address... (I will refrain from showing the group address on here to avoid giving it out to spambots. You will receive the group email address when you join the group).
You can also choose to send a separate email directly to another member in private by using the member's address rather than the list address.
How will I recognize a group message from the list?
All messages received from the group list will have [SCN] at the beginning of the subject line on every email. To avoid confusion, the group message will show the address of the list member who posted the question or commentary as the sender. The [SCN] in the subject line will let you know it is from the SCN group list and when you reply to the group message, the address of the list should appear in your "send to" box. Always double check to make sure which address is in your send box when you reply... it will avoid embarrassment... so to be on the safe side, just check the address each time before sending.
Anyone who ever worked or volunteered at SCN, CFN, AFRS or AFRTS in the Panama CZ is welcome to join our group. This also includes anyone who appeared on any aspect of SCN or were otherwise affiliated with SCN is welcome to join. We also have a few "friends of SCN" in some special cases. You don't have to choose between SCN group lists. You can belong to more than one list or as many lists as you like. We are not competing and each list has its own unique blend of subjects and discussions. Every SCN'er is welcome on our list.
Why is it a closed, private group?
To protect the privacy and personal information of each member and to create a safe, protected environment where our SCN'ers feel free to chat with their friends without having to worry.
Subscribing allows us to close the list to unwanted spam, spammers, spambots, hecklers or anyone with nefarious intentions. By subscribing, we know who all of the group members are and can better protect personal info from being obtained by unscrupulous means.
Is this a free subscription and are any strings attached?
Yes. No fees..... ever. This is a nonprofit, noncommercial site and list dedicated to our SCN family. No strings, no requirements, no expectations. Each member is free to come and go as they wish without any pressure. No advertisers will ever be permitted on our SCN website and list. No data mining, no cookies other than what the automated list feature controls need to help you change features on your group list account.
Yes. Our SCN site and list never collects info or data, never allows ads or commercial ventures on the site which is nonprofit and provided as a courtesy for our SCN family. No info will be collected or sold. Every effort will be made to keep spambots from collecting your info. Any attempts by spammers to access the list or send spam to the list are banned and blocked. Spammers cannot get into the list without being subscribed....and they will not be able to trick their way onto the list.
Who will be reading my emails?
Only other subscribed members of the list who are all former SCN'ers, volunteers or affiliates of the SCN family as described above. But be aware, that some of the members may also share computers with their spouses or kids.... so it is possible that family members of SCN group members may have access to the list messages.
The password you used when you subscribe to the group list, allows you to login to your account for the email group and change your features or read old messages. If you have forgotten your password, it will send it to your email account upon request.
What kind of messages or topics are sent on the list?
All different topics since we have SCN'ers on our group from all eras. Any member can start or respond to any new topic they wish. We talk about all kinds of things from old memories at SCN, broadcasting topics, finding missing friends, the weather, retirement, or jobs they are working at or have worked at in the past, genealogy, travel, wildlife, pets, travel, health.... we talk about anything just like friends do when they get together to share stories
What can I do if too many emails are generated by the group?
Since some of us are retired and others are still working, some members enjoy chatting while others may be working and not have enough time to read the emails and filling up their mailboxes can become a problem.
Here are some ideas & options on how to handle excessive emails:
Obtain and use an alternate free email account such as gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo... etc., to dedicate for receiving SCN list messages
Set up your email to be directed into a dedicated email folder.
Log into your SCN email group account and change your mail delivery options to "Digest" which will cause the system to collect the SCN emails each day and combine them into 1 email digest. Instead of receiving 20 or 30 emails, you only get one.
Log into your SCN email group account and change the delivery setting to stop all of the emails, which you can turn on and turn off at your discretion. Then you can still access the SCN message archives online and even download an entire day of emails in one file or simply read them online.
Your last option is to unsubscribe, however, if you use you features instead, you can maintain your account open and then still be able to read the messages online.
What access and feature options do I have?
By logging into your SCN email group account, you can change the following features and more:
change password
change email address
change to digest style delivery or back to normal
Stop & start emails
request password
Read old posts, topics and archives
view member list
make yourself invisible to other members
unsubscribe
What about joining other SCN groups?
Other groups are independent of this website and list, however, many members belong to both or more lists. There is no competition and conversations vary from list to list. You are welcome to join any other lists. Anyone from the SCN family is welcome to join our group including other list managers. No one from the SCN family shall be excluded from our list if they wish to join and can belong to any other lists as they desire.
If I unsubscribe, can I rejoin the group?
Yes, you can rejoin the group at any time by resubscribing.
Why has my subscription been delayed?
I have a lot of health issues, so I may not have attended to the request yet... or I don't recognize who you are and need to have more verification so I don't accidentally end up with a spammer or other nefarious data miner trying to steal info on our list. Send me a note describing your name and when you were at SCN. If I can't find someone to verify who you are .... which is just a precaution to protect the list, I will probably ask you a few questions about SCN and Panama which would not be known by any spammers trying to sneak onto our group by using info from the website. It is not intended to offend... but recently, we have been under heavy attack by spammers and data miners who are trying to fake their way onto the SCN group. So far. they have not gotten past me.
Why did my email to the group bounce?
Even if you are a subscribed member on the list, it will only recognize the email address you used to subscribe to the list and receive your list messages. So, if you use a secondary email address, the list will reject your email as an unauthorized attempt to post a message. But you can change to another email address at any time by logging into your account.
Who do I contact if I have more questions?
midge56
aol
com
(you will have to hand type the address since it
has been altered to prevent spambots and dataminers from copying our email
addresses.)
