this is the altar of a church in panama city...there was a famous "golden altar" that was actually thrown into the ocean to hide it from the notorious morgan-the-pirate during his raid on the city this building was in panama city, and was always under guard...it was either the headquarters of the Guardia National, or where Omar Torrijos lived...maybe someone knows.

Statue of Balboa

the Spanish explorer, Balboa, landed on the Atlantic side, not long after Columbus...he trekked with his band of merry men across the isthmus, and broke out of the jungle, according to reports, somewhere near what is now Panama City. he thrust his sword into the ocean, naming it the "Pacific"...(it was a calm day) and, with a move that took a lot of gaul...claimed all lands bordering that water for spain. needless to say...that claim didn't hold up...but he meant well.
