the red and white flag flying from the mast of the SS Pioneer Contractor indicates that a pan canal pilot is aboard. The pilots use their local knowledge of tides, currents, depths and winds to guide ships through the canal... they can even board and debark while the ship is underway. the flag of the Pioneer Contractor...this shot appeared as a station ID quite often...especially on holidays like July 4th and Memorial day

this Water Lilly, shot at Longwood gardens outside of Philadelphia was aired several times...  note the bee... he's smiling and saying,

"SCN 8 & 10."

the famous "cutter" or umbrella ants were a fixture on the grounds around the station. from time to time they would take the bushes apart, one leaf at a time... they'd cut them into sections, and carry them into their nest underground in the jungle behind the station. the decaying plant matter would allow fungus (mushrooms if you will) to form... that's what they actually ate. there were so many ants moving... that they actually wore a path in the lawn.

1shell.JPG (34727 bytes)

there were some interesting hobbies among residents of the zone...some people collected old bottles found at old canal construction sites...there was a mild earthquake not long after I left in 1970, and some of those collections were destroyed. this photo is of a miniature musician, made from seashells. note the trombone, it's a paperclip. this was made by warrant officer Bill Medieros...he had an entire orchestra...all made of seashells
